There are two ways cells make new cells. The most common way is called mitosis. The cell makes a copy of the DNA. Then it splits in two and each daughter cell has a complete copy of the original cells DNA.

The other way is called meiosis, and this is how the sex-cells (egg and sperm) are made. These cells only have 1/2 the DNA as the parent cell. This is so when the egg gets fertilized by the sperm it will have the full set of DNA.
