Prematurely laid eggs are often soft prior to leaving the hen. They get a harder shell on contact with ambient air and cooler temperatures. Not all come out like this but it does happen with older hens more frequently than birds in their prime.

Not usually, they can come out soft and harden within a few minutes but this is not the normal way an egg is laid. Larger amounts of calcium in the feed will sometimes correct this problem.

Soft eggs are often produced by older hens nearing the end of their laying years.

No, they're sometimes small, but not soft. A soft shell can sometimes mean a lack of calcium in their diet. This can be mended with oyster shell being added to their diet.
