Three ideas seem essential to the concept of a cult. One is thinking in terms of us versus them with total alienation from "them." The second is the intense, though often subtle, indoctrination techniques used to recruit and hold members. The third is the charismatic cult leader. Cultism usually involves some sort of belief that outside the cult all is evil and threatening; inside the cult is the special path to salvation through the cult leader and his teachings. The indoctrination techniques include

1) Subjection to stress and fatigue

2) Social disruption, isolation and pressure

3) Self criticism and humiliation

4) Fear, anxiety, and paranoia

5) Control of information

6) Escalating commitment

7) Use of auto-hypnosis to induce "peak" experiences

AnswerA good example is "Jones town." See the Related Link "Answers.com: Jonestown" for more information.

The above example shows you how one can start out meaning well and trying to build their idea on a Utopia (sort of like Heaven.) There are suppose to be good rules to protect the followers, live off the land and get along together. Jim Jones was trying to do this at the beginning, but, eventually he began to feel as if he was God himself and was full of power, greed and became pure evil. The man did more damage than one could know (the spiritual damage of ripping one's soul from them) and he preyed on the needy and poor mainly. He tore families apart and ended up forcing suicide on many who, although did not want to follow his wishes were forced by gun point. It's a fascinating subject in this case because it can show us humans that it's so easy to go over that fine edge from good to evil. I'm sure his soul will be damned for this one!
