To prevent bugs such as white fly, caterpillars and grasshoppers off of their crop so they don't lose any of it.

Farmers use pesticides to help control or suppress any living thing that is damaging the crop or stealing away anything the crop needs for healthy growth. A pest can be a weed, an insect, certain arthropoda, rodents, birds, bacteria, fungus, etc.

Pesticides in this group, for example rotenone, pyrethrum, nicotine, neem oil, and all of the botanical pesticides are products of living organisms. Often they are chemicals that plants and microbes use to protect themselves from parasites, predators and pathogens.

One opinion is stated above. Mine differs in that since the world's population continues to grow at an astronomical rate, I believe it is better to use chemicals and continue to be able to feed all those people rather than just let them starve. When better alternatives come along, as they do all the time, then we can continue integrating them into modern food production practice.

Just so you know, the US EPA definition of "pests" includes weeds.

Farmers want to use pesticides because the pests that feed in their croplands reduce the quantity of grain that the crops can produce. This means lower bushels and consequently less money in the bank. Pesticides are used to kill off crop-eating insects so that the plants can grow to a successful harvest.

Pesticides and herbicides are the respective ways that farmers control pests and weeds. Farmers also practice crop rotation and roto-tilling and use resistant varieties and row covers. Between crops, they will have ground covers to keep pests from overwintering and weeds from re-establishing.
