Human cannonballs are designed to impress, mesmerize and fascinate the young at heart, what looks like a human being shot out of a huge cannon like a bullet from a gun is meant to be misleading. Propulsion for the stunt person is provided by a catapult, compressed air or a spring, if gunpowder is used it's only purpose is for noise and the smoke. The landings are generally in a net, large airbags and sometimes a body of water. Safety factors have been calculated to make the stunt as safe as possible, although safety issues have been considered the stunt still has a number of deaths to it's credit.
