The raw materials are then melted in a furnace and the air bubbles are removed. It is then formed into the desired shape. Flat glass is formed using the "float glass" process. As it is poured into a molten tin bath, pressurized nitrogen is added, giving it a polished finish. Bottles and jars are made by blowing and pressing methods. Then it is annealed, meaning it is slowly cooled to make it strong. Finally, surface treatments such as coatings or lamination may be applied. Windshields, for instance, are really two layers with a thin layer of plastic between them for safety reasons. That way, when it breaks, there is very little flying glass from the windshield. It just crumbles into pieces, and most stay connected to the plastic.
