∙ 6y agoCarbon dating of the fossils they find. Carbon-isotope dating does not reach back to the Mesozoic Era but other isotopic methods can be used. They rely on radioactive half-lives so the longer the half-life of a particular element the older it can be. The measurement is of the ratio between decaying element and daughter element (or isotope).

In other words: the dinosaur lived, died, left fossils, the scientists found and studied the fossils, and named the dinosaur "Utahraptor".
