The single best source I have ever seen for American casualty rates, by classes of troops, for all U.S. wars, is the book Stolen Valor.

In it are figures for draftees, volunteers, age groups, ethnicity, economic background, and more.

You can get this from your local library system (by request if necessary). It is a handy reference for comparisons of this type and also lists the best original source documents for the numbers.

[CACF] (Combat Area Casualty File) November 1993. (The CACF is the basis for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, i.e. The Wall), Center for Electronic Records, National Archives, Washington, DC

Deaths Average Age Total 58,148 23.11 years Enlisted 50,274 22.37 years Officers 6,598 28.43 years Warrants 1,276 24.73 years E1 525 20.34 years 11B MOS 18,465 22.55 years

Did senator Kerry compare irag to Vietnam?

Nearly ALL politicians, movie stars, and the common person relate ANY current conflict with Vietnam, because that was America's last major war. Operation Urgent Fury in 1983 (Grenada) was compared to Vietnam; so was Operation Just Cause in 1989 (Panama); as was Operation Desert Storm in 1991 (Iraq), etc. etc. They certainly cannot be compared with a TOTAL war which was "declared" and used atomic weapons...such as WWII.

Compare Vietnam war deaths to Iraq war deaths?

The Vietnam War, like Korea, WWII, WWI, were largely fought by conscripted (drafted) men. Desert Storm, and the current Irag conflict has been fought by an all volunteer military. The fact is that the majority of us that served in Vietnam, were RA (enlisted), especially in the early years,1960-1967. At wars end,the DoD stated that 54% of Vietnam Vets, were volunteers. A questionare was sent to Vietnam vets asking if they would do it again and 75% answered YES,even knowing the end result. So please get facts before posting. Vietnam was NOT largely fought by Draftees but volunteers. The ones that were drafted, fought and died as valorous as any troops of any war and that too is a fact.
