Exponents are basically repeated multiplications. Take this for example:

3*3 = 32

In this example 32 is called the exponent; 3 is the base and 2 is the exponent.

So to get an exponent you have to have a bunch of a SAME number multiplied by itself. The number that you multiplied it by itself is the base and the times you multiplied it is the exponent (written at the right side above of the base).

Here are is two more examples:

9*9*9*9*9 = 95

4*4*4*4*4*4*4*4*4*4*4 = 411
