the problem during earthquakes are falling objects. In general the best practice for during earthquakes is toget under tables, chairs, beds, doors, or anything that can withstand high loads.

You should pack emergency food like water bottles and granola bars and canned food and silverware and pack money and clothes and a brush and tooth paste

You can't avoid earthquakes, which is a part of mother nature. You can't avoid earthquakes without getting off of the land. You could go out into the oceans, fly, or to outer space to avoid earthquakes. You may also make try to prevent damages that a future earthquake may cause.

Having often thought about this possibility, but having never been in it, I have thought that maybe the safest place is out in the very open!!

(Later Edit: The recent huge earthquakes killing 100's in Christchurch, NZ, bear this course of action out, in fact. Special services and police were having all people out into the middle of the street. When news crew moved in later, they were directed to travel the middle of the streets, well away from buildings and fallen debris.)

Text Continued:

Consider: If one hems oneself in, it could be that great faults develop in all the surrounding structures and they cave in to the point that even if you live, you cannot possibly remove or push against all the concrete and structure hemming you in.

If you hide under a bed, other structures - above could collapse all around it and you may never get out.

I have heard it said that one of the best places to be in earthquake is in a doorway.

Let's hope the frame around it is a strong one!

It has also been suggested to hide under a table to prevent injuries - maybe if the table is shifted near to the door frame, there is also a possible escape route!

Personally, re-thinking it, though, if you have time, I think the safest place is hanging onto a sturdy tree that probably has large roots - so that even should the tree fall, it is unlikely to break up.

Even if it fell, it would take longer to uproot than crashing buildings and other man-made structures or boulders falling from surrounding hills.

I would suggest that one of your safest bets might be to climb into the very lowest branches of a broad tree and wrap yourself in just in case you fall 'free' of the tree and get crushed.

The only other obvious advice is: if you receive sufficient warning, dress in helmet and thick protective clothing.

Apart from not settling in a place where there are earthquakes there isn't that much you can do. Keep a bag packed so that you can be ready to move out, stockpile some food and water.

Which is worse earthquakes or tsunamis?

Earthquakes are worse than tsunamis. Earthquakes are mostly unpredictable but tsunamis are sometimes predictable which sets warning for people to escape shore. Earthquakes destroy buildings but tsunamis don't. When tsunamis hit land, the buildings acts like a strong shield that cuts through the tsunami like what the wind-breaker does to the wind. Earthquakes can do more damage than tsunamis because earthquakes destroy buildings which takes much short time than rebuilding it which tsunamis only cause flash flooding which can be recovered as soon as possible. It's very difficult to escape an earthquake but it's sometimes easy to escape a tsunami. It's very difficult to recover the earthquake damage, therefore earthquakes are considered as the modest natural disaster.

Which gas can be used to predict earthquakes?

Radon is the gas that can [or cannot!] be used to predict earthquakes. Its levels noticeably may rise in basements and wells. That's because of the air and water escape routes that may form in soil 6-24 hours before an earthquake.

Are there more earthquakes or tornadoes?

Earthquakes, by far, occur most frequently. On average, each year, there are about 1,800 tornadoes are recorded. The actual number of tornadoes is probably higher, most likely a few thousand, due to the many tornadoes that escape detection. By contrast, between five hundred thousand and 1 million earthquakes are recorded each year, of which 100,000 are strong enough to be felt.

How come volcanoes aren't that dangerous as earthquakes and tsunami?

That is because you can predict a volcano eruption before it reupts such as the animals behave differently or ash, lava, smoke, cinda and sand is seen on top of the volcano. There will be enough time to escape before it erupts. However, tsunamis and earthquakes occur suddenly anytime. We will never know when will it happen...

What compares and contrasts earthquakes and tsunamis?

Compare: 1.) They are both natural disasters. 2.) They can kill people. 3.) They are linked to plate tectonics. 4.) Sometimes, they happen together, especially undersea earthquake triggering a tsunami. Contrast: 1.) In the Hong Kong Observatory, there is no earth quake warning but there is tsunami warning. 2.) There is only one way which triggers an earthquake, but there are several ways that triggers a tsunami like undersea earthquake, undersea volcano, severe undersea landslide, etc. 3.) Earthquakes destroy buildings, tsunami don't. 4.) Earthquakes are measured in Richter scale while tsunami is measured in tsunami scale. 5.) Tsunami comes from a Japanese word meaning "harbour wave". 6.) Earthquakes are mostly unpredictable, but tsunamis are sometimes predictable. 7.) Earthquakes vary in intensity while tsunami vary in height. 8.) It's difficult to escape an earthquake but it's easy to escape a tsunami. 9.) Earthquakes are considered as the modest or worst natural disasters ever.
