How to Avoid Passing Cold and FluWhen you're sick, keep your distance from others. If possible, stay home from work. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, then throw it away. If you don't have a tissue, turn your head away from people near you and cough into the crook of your arm ("into your elbow") covering your nose and mouth. (Don't cover your nose or mouth with your bare hands unless you can wash them directly afterward.)

Here are a few tips:

  1. Wash your hands before you eat, after you use the bathroom and after you go shopping (you can use hand sanitizer, too.) or are out in public touching doors or other things people touch (pens, ATM buttons, door knobs, etc.)
  2. Never eat or drink after someone else, even a family member.
  3. Wear gloves when coming in contact with other people's body fluids (health care professionals follow this rule).
  4. Keep shared toys clean.
