This is entirely dependand on the key, the new keys that operate the car from entering into a slot with no blade has an internal battery that charges itself during operation, likewise with the diamond shaped, 3 button EWS keys. if either of these fails then a new key may be requried, also a simple initialisation process can be done at your local dealer to try and recode the radio waves with the car as this can sometimes be lost. this should take a matter of minutes and should not be charged (dependand on the car) other types of keys may have a small rectangular cover on the back which can be popped off revealing 2 screws, these batteries need to be changed within 30 seconds otherwise the key loses its pairing with the vehicle. illuminated keys come apart by sliding the light and batter out from the top, or may also be removed from the rear depending on the key.
