Remove the driveshaft. then the tailshaft, there are 4 bolts holding the tailshaft in. look inside and you'll see the drive gear. mine was held in with a metal spring clip. relieve the tension from the spring, then slide the gear/spring out. putting it back in, just reverse the method, make sure you put the clip into the slot on the gear and then slide it back in. the knotch on the clip should pop into the little whole on the shaft to hold the gear from spinning on it's own.
Has just the sensor been replaced or the plastic drive gear in the trans as well The drive gear often wears uneven causing the speedo to go inop
Speedometer calibration differs depending on the vehicle and age. Some cars are calibrated by a technician with a computer program. Others require a gear change to drive the speedometer at a different ratio.
The drive gear is in the tail shaft of the transmission. The driven gear is on the end of the speedometer cable housing.
did you check the speedometer gear in the tranny?
driver side of the trans tail shaft.the cable unscrews and it is inside it will be colored.
IF the speedometer is not working it is because the computer is note getting a signal from the trans. and will not tell it to shift. Try replacing the speedometer the sensor in the tail shaft of the trans.
If this is a 1990 transmission it should have a gear driven speed sensor (wires go to engine computer)along with the speedometer drive cable that goes to mechanical speedometer in dash.(all one unit that plugs into hole in tailshaft housing)They stopped making the drive gear on the output shaft around 1995 or so, and the speedometers went to digital. If the trans. you have does not have this drive gear and hole on the tailshaft for it, then you would have to tear the trans down and install a new output shaft with the gear machined on it, and a new tailshaft housing with the mounting hole for the cable and sensor from a earlier model.Hardly worth all that trouble. I am looking for a e4od transmission for my van just incase you want to sell one, but it needs to fit a big block 460. I want to get rid of the C6 for overdrive.Hope this helps.
look at the gearbox under the car there should be a bolt on the side undo it whack the stuff in till it starts pourein out. Actually this is true on most cars, but the escort is different. The transmission uses Mercon Auto Trans. Fluid. You take the speedometer drive cable out of the top of the transmission. Add the fluid in through the opening where the VSS and speedometer drive gear went. The proper level is to the top of the drive gear.
Because your speedometer drive gear box probably needs to be replaced. Jack up the car (drive wheels off ground) disconnect speedo from transmission. Have someone start the car, put it in drive and look at the gear box to see if it is spinning. The drive gear box costs less than 20 buck son most cars.
if it is auto look under the car, right at the back of the trans on the drivers side. its a little box looking thing it the side of the trans.
you would need to change the differential gears to change the gear drive.
It depends on the gear ratio in the differential.
