It depends on the gun, but in general, you field strip it, put some gun cleaner on it, wipe the gun cleaner off, lube it, then reassemble the gun. You should consult the manual for the specific gun to verify any specific requirement and safety information.
I assume you mean GUM, and not GUN. Chewing gum does not effectively clean your teeth.

if you clean it ....then it wont jam ....but in the Vietnam War they told the soldiers not to clean the gun cuz ...it was a self cleaning gun ....so it jammed alot

You shouldn't. It will break down the gun oil since there are solvents in it.
open the cylinder and make sure it is EMPTY. Then merely swab down the inside of the barrel with a gun cleaner solvent as well as the cylinder. clean bore and cylinder with clean patches, then apply light coat of gun oil to bore, cylinder and outside of gun. Gun stores sell pistol cleaning kits..............
