I Confess to You

I confess to almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done, and in what I have failed to do; and I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

Forgive me father, for I have sinned...

Then tell him your sins.

Roman Catholic AnswerKneel down, cross yourself and say, "Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned."

"It has been {time period, say one month, or whatever it was} since my last confession".

"Since then, I accuse myself of:"

here list all your mortal sins BY NUMBER, with any clarifying details:

examples:

I missed Mass on Sunday, once.

I had impure thoughts, seven times.

if you are not sure if it was a sin, ask the priest. Then you may (and should, but you don't have to) confess your venial sins, or at least the one or two most troubling. Then say:

"For these and all other sins which I can not now remember, I am heartily sorry, and humbly ask pardon of God, and Penance, Absolution, and counsel of you, Father.

Father will impose your penance, ask you any questions he may have, and give you advice on avoiding sin in the future, then he will ask you to make an good Act of Contrition:

Act of Contrition

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, who are all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life.

then he will absolve you and dismiss you. Thank the priest. Go to the pew, and say your penance. Then thank God from the bottom of your heart!

Confession Prayers Act of Contrition

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because of Thy just punishments, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, Who art all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to sin no more and to avoid the near occasions of sin.

OR

My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy.

OR

O my God, I am sorry for my sins because I have offended you. I know I should love you above all things. Help me to do penance, to do better, and to avoid anything that might lead me to sin. Amen.

After Confession

O almighty and most merciful God, I give You thanks with all the powers of my soul for this and all other mercies, graces, and blessings bestowed on me, and prostrating myself at Your sacred feet, I offer myself to be henceforth forever Yours. Let nothing in life or death ever separate me from You! I renounce with my whole soul all my treasons against You, and all the abominations and sins of my past life. I renew my promises made in Baptism, and from this moment I dedicate myself eternally to Your love and service. Grant that for the time to come, I may detest sin more than death itself, and avoid all such occasions and companies as have unhappily brought me to it. This I resolve to do by the aid of Your divine grace, without which I can do nothing. Amen.

Prayer before Confession

Receive my confession, O most loving and gracious Lord Jesus Christ, only hope for the salvation of my soul. Grant to me true contrition of soul, so that day and night I may by penance make satisfaction for my many sins. Savior of the world, O good Jesus, Who gave Yourself to the death of the Cross to save sinners, look upon me, most wretched of all sinners; have pity on me, and give me the light to know my sins, true sorrow for them, and a firm purpose of never committing them again.

O gracious Virgin Mary, Immaculate Mother of Jesus, I implore you to obtain for me by your powerful intercession these graces from you Divine Son.

You don't! You confess on your knees to a Holy God, your creator, the only one who is just and able to forgive you of your sins. Then, you repent, and ask his forgiveness in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

It is very easy to confess to a priest because they are very forgiving and understanding. All you do is show up at your local church for Reconsiliation, and confess. Priests are available to talk almost all the time, except for Mass. You will feel better about yourself as well!

Under ordinary circumstances, only Catholics can receive the sacrament of confession. Catholics are obliged to confess any mortal sins at least once a year. Mortal sin means committing serious sin with full knowledge and acceptance of what you are doing.

The first step is to make an examination of conscience. Prayerfully consider what sins you have to confess since your last confession. In particular, you must do your best to think of every mortal sin you have committed since your last confession. It is also good to think of venial or less serious sins.

The next step is to repent from all your sins. You must have contrition or sorrow for sin and a firm purpose of amendment.

Third, make your confession. Most parishes have regularly scheduled times for confession, or you can schedule a time to meet with a priest. Confession can be made anonymously behind a screen, or face to face with the priest. It is a good idea to tell the priest how long it has been since your last confession. Then you must list any mortal sins, as well as any venial sins you want to confess.

After this, the priest may give you some words of advice and exhortation. Then he should ask you to pray an act of contrition, a prayer expressing your sorrow for your sins. Here is a short act of contrition: "O my God, I am sorry for my sins because I have offended you. I know I should love you above all things. Help me to do penance, to do better, and to avoid anything that might lead me to sin. Amen."

After this the priest pronounces absolution with the words, "I absolve you of your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." Through these words the Church teaches that God forgives your sins. Finally, the priest will give you penance, prayers or other actions intended to strengthen your resolve to avoid sin, root out sin from your heart and unite yourself more closely to God.
