In order to connect a PS3 to a HDTV you need either component cables or and HDMI cable. You have to make sure your TV has either one of these connections. The component cables are blue, green, and red for video, red and white for audio. The HDMI cable is a D shaped looking cable that provides video and audio with a single cable. HDMI looks nothing like component or composite cables. Of course you also need an HDTV.

If your DVD Home Theater system has a optical or coaxial digital input, connect the digital audio output of the Blu-Ray player to this input. You will not get the benefit of DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD lossless audio, but it will still be surround sound. Without a digital input, you should sell the old DVD system and buy a HDMI-capable surround receiver.

I think this is the right way as I don't have a blue- ray player so this is my guess, attach the USB you got with it in the computer/ laptop in the USB hole (connect the other end into the blue- ray player then hopefully it should pick it up on the computer/ laptop.

If your TV has an optical audio input in the back, all you need to do is run one optical cable from your TV into your receiver and find the right setting on the receiver to get sound though your theater system. If it does not have optical input, You need to run video and audio through the receiver with component cables, or if your receiver is new and has HDMI in the back, you could take that rout. Maybe if your old school and don't worry to much about sound quality, you could simply run an auxillary cable or coax through it.

What kind of cables are needed for a home theater system?

Can you connect a bluray player to a home theater system?

There are a variety of ways to connect a Bluray player to a home theater system. The two signals needed are video and audio. The precise details depend on the type of system so the following is only general advice. For HD video, an HDMI connector will be needed. This will connect to the monitor or projector. There may be a central signal router or AV receiver in the system, in which case, the HDMI connector might plug into one of the inputs at the router. Audio can be obtained from the HDMI connector. If there is a receiver for audio processing, the HDMI may be connected to it and another link will then carry the video signal on to the monitor or projector. If there is no receiver, the monitor may have stereo or surround sound audio outputs that are generated from the audio content of the HDMI signal. If none of these options are available, audio can normally be taken direct from the Bluray player into an amplifier. The connection may be analog on RCA connectors or there might be a digital output that can be decoded by a surround sound processor. Before plugging in any cables, take some time to study the inputs and outputs of each piece of equipment and plan the routing of video and audio signals. Having a plan before you start will avoid a great deal of trial and error.
