Do a slip knot on the needle make 48 stitches on the needle then do the Knit stitch technique until you get it the correct length you want if you want different colors then do a slip knot on the end string with your next color. I suggest 50 rows for a newborn blanket or 60-100 rows for a kid or bigger blanket so get knitting oh, and you might want to check out this website http:/www.wikihow.com/Knit-Blankets

Choose your yarn and appropriate hook. Make a chain the width that you want your blanket to be. If you want to work in single crochet, work a single crochet in the second chain from hook and each chain after that. At the end of the row, ch 1, turn and work single crochets across the row (including the first stitch but don't go into the ch 1)

If you want to work in double crochet, work a double crochet in the 4th chain from hook and every chain after that. When you get to the end of the row, chain 3, turn, and work double crochets across starting in the 2nd stitch and working a dc in the chain that started the row.

Work as many rows as needed to get to the height you want your afghan to be. If you need to change skeins, work the final stitch to the last step and complete the stitch with the new yarn. You will weave the two dangling strands in two directions when you are done. Weave them in one direction, then skip a stitch and weave back in the other direction for several inches. Clip any leftover, being careful not to clip an actual stitch.

If desired you can add a pretty edging all around.

Why does your yarn have slack when you knit?

Part of knitting is managing the tension you establish for your style of knitting.Try wrapping your yarn around your yarn finger once or twice, in order to establish a knitting tension -- the slack or lack of it -- that you want. (Your yarn finger is on the hand that holds the needles, while you knit actively with the needle in the other hand.)
