I have lived all my life with members of my family with this disorder.

Always always make sure they take their medication. If they wont take meds, look in to alternative.

Look into therapy as well, for yourself.

Remember you have to put yourself first, that is the key, otherwise you will be no good to anyone.

At all times you have to be honest. I know this sounds hard, but you will always need someone to confide in.

And most of all good luck.

It depends on the personality disorder. But in general, the person with the personality disorder must be treated with respect, and equally the person dealing with the disordered person must demand respect. This can be quite difficult, especially with personality disorders such as narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) where the NPD sufferer is so troubled by their narcissistic wound that they care little for anyone around them and can be very abusive.

If one is to react negatively to the NPD sufferer then they will find themselves locked in a dance that the NPD is an expert at. They will find themselves attacked and if not careful end up having their self esteem destroyed. The NPD sufferer knows how to attack a person's self esteem, and all their own fears and self hatred will be projected onto you. Arguing with an NPD is futile, as the NPD is beyond reason.

The only way to deal with such a person is to be firm, and calm. Do not allow them to manipulate you into their game. Maintain your self respect, and focus on the big picture, do not let the NPD distract you into arguing about a topic of their choosing.

People with personality disorders defy normal empathetic reactions. Remember, you are not dealing with a normal person, showing sympathy or admitting your weaknesses may well result in the personality disordered individual using this against you to exonerate themselves of any culpability.

Personality disordered individuals (PDI) tend to be very manipulative and one needs to be on constant guard against them. You need to develop your own emotional maturity and to be self reflective enough to know your own weaknesses in order to prevent the PDI from exploiting them.

You may be suprised to find yourself saying cruel things you would not normally say in frustration at the arrogance of a PDI, then to later find yourself feeling incredibly guilt and stress when the PDI attacks you for it.

PDI's can be said to have an emotional age of a child and the intellectual age of an adult, complete with all the manipulative skill sets of an adult, making them one difficult person to deal with.

Loving a PDI can be very stressful and potentially detrimental to your health. In order to help them they have to want to be helped. And in order to want to be helped they have to aknowlege their need to be helped and their weaknesses, which most are incapable of.

It has happened that by setting boundaries with a PDI and maintaining a composed and calm manner or a long time the PDI might decide to improve. This decision will be theirs and theirs alone, not a empathetic response to your love, but a realisation that continuing on their previous abusive path will result in your continually leaving them alone, or not supplying them with the narcissistic supply that they need.

Getting them into therapy can result in you being slandered and blamed as the problem due to the PDI's ability to often manipulate the therapist.

Dialectic Behaviour Therapy has been shown to be effective in NPD and other personality disorders. Other promising areas are psychoanalysis, Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) based on Buddhist Calm Abiding meditation.

1) Listen to what he has to say. Appear attentive and alert.

2) Agree with his point or argument. It helps to select a specific issue he addressed during the course of the conversation.

3) Demonstrate relevance of his point, particularly with regard to your own life or why it helps you.

4) Flatter his intelligence and ability.

5) Thank him for his perceptive and unique insight.

Tips: Don't engage the individual in an argument or take things too personally. Histrionic individuals are similar to narcissists in that they believe their opinions are superior to those of others. Don't get emotionally attached to the histrionic individual or indulge him emotionally.
