There are input methods you can install on Windows and Linux, and likewise with "keyboards" with Mac. If you do not wish to install input methods, there are also specialized software like NJStar (a Chinese word processor), and there are some online IMEs you can use to type in Chinese as well.

To be able to read Chinese on your computer you must have the language installed in your computer. Chinese is based on characters not from the English alphabet and this means that your computer will need the programs/files to decode Chinese characters.

To add Chinese on windows XP, go into 'Control Panel'...'Regional and Language Options'...Select the 'Languages' tab...Under Text services and input languages' click on 'Details' ... Click on 'Add'... Then select the Chinese language you wish to add. There are different encodings of Chinese for different countries so you can install all of the files if you wish. (Note: You may need your windows installation disk to add languages.)

Now that you have Chinese in your operating system you should be able to read Chinese in documents and files. To be able to read it in your web browser, you will need to also add Chinese into your browser's language capabilities.

There are a many different ways Chinese characters can be entered on a computer.

1. Pinyin which uses the english alphabet to sound out the character.

2. Bo Po Mo Fo or zhuyin fuhao is not used as often but is based on a type of Chinese alphabet that used simiarly like the English alphabet. There are 37 characters and 4 tones in the Chinese zhuyin fuhao system. Each key on the keyboard would represent on character or tone. All the alphabet keys as well as the numbers are used.

3. Cangjie is based on root characters that are within one Chinese character. A Chinese character is broken down into different geographical parts and each part can be represented by a basic character component. There are 24 different character components.

4. Handwriting recognition. Characters can be entered using a mousepad or tablet.

5. Voice recognition. Characters can be entered in via a voice recognition software and microphone.

Again, there are many different ways to enter Chinese characters into a computer. These are just some examples.

How do Chinese people type their signs in the keyboard - they do not have letters but signs and it is thousands which not fit in one small keyboard?

Ohkay, so in the Chinese language, we have something called PINYIN, which shows the pronunciation in the English alphabet. For example ni hao means hello. So for the Chinese keyboard, we type in the pinyin for the word we want, & then a box pops out with Chinese characters, and they're numbered so we choose the word we need when we type in the number. Many words have the same pinyin but they always have totally different meanings and look different.

How does a Chinese keybord works when there are thousands of letters?

Because there are thousands of Chinese letters, a Chinese keyboard works differently than traditional keyboards. A standard Roman alphabet keyboard is used as well as a spelling system called pinyin. To generate a character, you type out its sound according to the spelling system. The computer then converts it to the correct Chinese characters.

Why when you type on the laptop does it type the wrong letter?

your keyboard types what letter you press. you may be typing to fast and it doesnt register each letter or you may have gotten a computor with wrong keyboard wiring. or you may be hitting a letter when you meant to hit a different letter or you think it is a different letter. if this happens a few times in minutes then slow down and watch your hands to make sure you type the right letter. it happens to me all the time.

Can you type Chinese characters using computer keyboard?

Yes, in 1958, the Chinese Government approved the use of a system of Romanisation called Pin Yin. Pin Yin is the way Chinese is written using western, or Roman, letters. Chinese language can be entered through a western keyboard, using software which supports Pin Yin. Google has free pinyin input software that you can find in the link below.
