∙ 14y agoThe fit of a saddle is very important. There should be no restriction of the shoulder and the back of the saddle should not sit behind the last rib, as this can interfere with the horse's movement. The arch of the saddle (directly under the horn) should have adequate clearance. The central gullet (underside) must maintain clearance all the way to the back. A too narrow gullet will cause pinching. There should be even bearing surface at from and rear of the saddle. Saddles are expensive and a good fitting one is vital to your horse's back. It's always good to get an expert's advise. As a final note: After unsaddling your horse his back where the saddle pad was should be uniformily sweaty with no dry patches. If you see patches of hair that is dry the saddle was pinching his back enough to discourage sweating. Not a good sign.

∙ 12y agoThe saddle of your horse needs to really be checked professionaly by a saddler but the actual size is measure by you. There are average sizes for different types of people;
Upto a 15" for a small child/toddler.
16" for the average child/small teenager.
17" Average teenager/lady.
18" for the average man.
But as I say choose wisely.

It sounds like you may have a 'youth' saddle. A pony saddle is pretty small and you would be able to tell right away that it was meant for ponies. A youth saddle is meant for that in-between stage when the rider has outgrown a pony saddle and is still to small for a full sized horse saddle. To find out you can measure the saddle's tree. Take a tape measure and start at the pommel and run the tape to the cantle. This will give you an idea of the size of the tree which is what the entire saddle is based on.
