SMART on drive means Self-Monitoring And Reporting Technology. SMART is really an essential to your hard drive. It is the monitoring system for Hard Disk Drives (HDD) and Solid State Drives (SSD). They are used to detect and report indicators of reliability in the hope of anticipating failures.

When SMART error occur, there are hints/cluesthat may help you identify that it is a SMART error:

  • Slow in processing speed. When you open a file, you need to wait a long long time to successfully open it.
  • Extremely High Physical Memory Usage. Physical memory usage can be found on the Task Manager on performance tab. If it was really high, then there's something unusual with your hard drive. Usually, the color of the lines where changed to orange.
  • Slow start-up. Whenever you booted up PC/Laptop, it was really slow. Besides, if you clicked anything upon start-up, the PC/Laptop will hang and you need to force shutdown it. But believe me, Forcing it to Shutdown will make the situation even Worse! Just wait for it to response.
  • A notification in the Quick Launch area. The quick launch are in Windows OS can be found on the bottom right corner of your screen. Action center will be available or will notify you saying that windows has detected SMART Hard Disk Error. It will advice you to back up immediately.

How to fix:

Sadly, there is no way to fix SMART error on hard disk. SMART error is an imminent drive failure! You cannot fix it. Drive is about to Die.

What to Do:

1. Be Calm. Do not ever panic. When you panic, you will lose your mind and it may lead to a deeper system failure. Relax. You can still do something even you have SMART hard disk error.

2. Back-up Now! It is a must that you back-up your files immediately. If you are running an original Windows OS, then Microsoft SkyDrive can help you a bit. You can store your files online. But it's recommended to back-up your files using CD or other external sources.

  • Bootable Rescue Disk - There are numerous Bootable Rescue Disk program that can be found on Google. Besides, some antivirus and internet security program has it's special Bootable Rescue Disk. Some are ESET SysRescue, AVG Rescue CD, Dr.Web LiveCD, Norton Bootable Recovery tool and many many more. Some of them needs to be bought but others are completely free. Check the Google for it. Just download a Bootable Rescue Disk program, buy a massive space DVD/CD or even USB and your ready to back-up! To restore back-up files, just insert the disk on the reader and it will back-up files automatically!
  • Back-Up Manually - These is not an 'so much' recommended way. This is just recommended if you have few files in your drive. Just copy those files in the USB and that's it! But again, this is not the best way to back-up files.
  • Online Back-up - You can back-up your files online. But remember it is just a very limited support.
  • Scratch those programs up - Write down on a piece of paper all the programs in your PC. They might not be recovered even you back-up. Just download and reinstall these programs after you install your new hard disk drive and operating system.

3. Run Disk Check - You should have finish your back-up before doing these so in case anything bad happens then you will be ready. What if it was just a false alarm? What if it's not a SMART Error and just a lighter disk error? Try to run the Disk Check. Go to "Computer" or "My Computer" and right-click the "Drive C:" select properties. On 'Tools' tab click the "Check Now". On Windows 7, it may prompt you to schedule the Disk Check. Click "Schedule Disk Check". Restart the computer. It will not lead you automatically to your desktop. Instead, it will run a Disk Check. You have 10 seconds to postponed the Disk Check. Otherwise, wait for it to finish. After the Disk Check, check the Action center if the problem is fixed. If not, then you are in danger of SMART error.

4. Buy Everything You Need - When a SMART error happens, a user cannot do anything to fix it. So go outside and canvass for the prize for the cheapest hard disks. You may need a new clean Windows installer and essential programs that you run in your previous hard disk. Hard disks are sensitive, keep it in a smooth stable area away from any kinds of magnetism.

5. Repair Your PC - Open the side case and unscrew the bolts. Unplug it's connection and remove it from your CPU. Place your newly brough Hard Disk and screw the bolts. Plug it in to the power source, SATA, and power button. Start a new clean installation of Windows. Install the applications and programs you used on your previous drive. Then run the Rescue CD.

TIPS:

  • It's better to consult a licensed technician to fix this problems.
  • You can still use your other Hard Drive (the one with SMART error) rather than throwing it to trash. Use it as an external drive. Buy an external drive enclosure and you can use it for external files. But do not rely on it all the time since it has a SMART error.
  • Keep magnetism away from your CPU. Also, avoid shaking the CPU/Laptop.
  • Always perform a weekly routine PC check up.

How do you fix error biohd-1?

BIOHD-8 is a SMART drive error code. It's issued when SMART thinks your drive is failing. Doing some reseach it seems that there have been issues with HP computers and this error code occurring but nobody seems to know why. If you believe that the hard drive is not faulty access the BIOS and look for the option HDD SMART Enable (or similar) and disable it. Do a reboot then get into the operating system and select the C: hard drive properties. On the tools page you will find a hard drive test tool run it and it will tell you it cannot run as the drive is in use. It will then ask you if you wish to reschedule a test on reboot. Select that option and reboot the machine. This will report and fix and drive protocol errors that have occurred but it will NOT repair the drive if the mechanics are faulty. Replacement is the only way to fix that.

What would be good lyrics for a song about hard disk recovery?

Most people would probably not enjoy a song about hard disk recovery unless it was funny or some type of advertisement. Perhaps the lyrics could be "If you need a fix for your hard disk, then bring it in and don't take a risk!"
