I have a 1998 Mountaineer and had the same problem. There was dust in the electrical connections. All the dealer did was blow it out and charge me an outragous service fee

The computer module in a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer is located behind the rear right panel in the truck space. The rear right seat belt panel must be removed and then the lower panel. The module is located beneath a green plug.
There is a round push button on the side panel of each front seat, located between the seat and the door. Push this button to activate or deactivate the heated seat feature.
codes on my 2001 were located behind the passenger side rear seat seat belt panel. I got instructions off EBay for $15. Well worth it.
