If the engine is burning oil, the valve guides or piston rings are probably worn. The low cost solution is to use a thicker oil or oil additive like STP or one of the other brands. An egine rebuild may be needed.
First you need to identify the cause of the miss. Whether it be fuel or ignition.
A VTEC problem on a Mazda MX-6...? We don't have VTEC engines.. those can be found in Honda's. Are you talking about the North American de-tuned KLDE mx6 engine or the Jspec KLZE engine? I believe the European one is KF something.. :P

IF the system is the same as the Mazda pickups and Mazda Navajo, HeaterTreater has a product that will fix the problem. Mazda diagrams are hard to come by. If you check the pictures on the Ebay listing, you should be able to determine if the fix will work.
