That depends on the leak. There are many different kinds of Plumbing leaks and many ways to fix them. Be a little more specific. For example, a leak around the handle of an old style faucet may require only packing. An old style faucet that won't turn off may get by with only a new faucet washer, but if it's been leaking a while the "seat" may be eroded and it may need to be reamed. New style faucets use replacable cartriges. Copper or plastic pipes can be punctured by a nail or other sharp object and may leak. P-traps may have rusted through and need to be replaced. The gasket of a p-trap may have failed and needs to be replaced. I'm sure I've forgotten some types of leaks, so let's talk about specifics.

If it is on a joint, drain all the water in that pipe, heat with torch until solder starts to melt, brush the joint with solder paste, and re-apply solder. If it is not on a joint, replace the affected pipe. small leaks can be stopped with the help of jublie clips. you can put a asbestos lining underneath jublie clip for good result.

IN ADDITION: Please take note that asbestos is considered a health hazard worldwide and should be avoided. Re-soldering a joint is an option but not a permanent solution. rather cut out the affected joint and replace it with a new one.

If the leak is around a fitting and you can see it, then it may be repairable. Unfortunately many heaters leak at the welded seams and there is no satisfactory repair for that. You may well need a new heater. If you know basic plumbing this is not a complicated job. If you don't, call a competent handyman or plumber (although a plumber will cost a lot more)

Here there are two options: you can call in a contractor, or if your handy with tools you can fix this yourself fairly easily. For the first call Roto-Rooter. To fix it find the leak, shut off your water. Then cur the pipe with a saw, and place two coupleing (on on each side of the space) and place a properly measured peice of pipe of the same type in its place. Cememnt in place.

This depends on the size and the location of the leak. It depends because a leak on the straight piece of the pipe will differ from a leak on the joint of the pipe. It also depends on the corrosion of the pipe and the extent as to how bad it is.
