Balancing actThe way I was told is to get some weights ( available at the hardware store ) and start with one blade, tape the weight to the blade and run the fan if it gets better affix it permanantly, if it gets worse try another blade till you have balanced the unit.

A ceiling fan exerts a lot more force on an electrical box than a light or other ceiling hung fixture, because it moves constantly and has a greater weight.

May be loose where it attaches to ceiling. Possible to wedge something between base and ceiling. For the wobble, a balance kit is available that is a small weight that sticks to the blade that is out of balance. There is a clip that can be cliped on the edge of the blade and moved along the length to find the right spot for the weight. Try one blade by putting the clip in the middle of the blade on the edge, turn it on and see if it gets better or worse. Do this to each blade and you will find the one that is out of balance. Clean the blades first, it may just be dust buildup.

First remove the fan. check to see if the rough in box is loose and make sure a box that is fastened between the joist bays has been used. I cant tell you how many homeowners try to mount to a regular work box. Next make sure the mounting plate for the fan if there is one is lagged to the joist. If there is still play in the fan. make sure all the blades are tight. some times a loose blade or a blade installed the wrong way will throw it out. You should probably do this step first.

Most fans come with balancing weights. If you have none now, it's possible to use plasticine or modelling clay. Possibly the most difficult thing is deciding WHICH blade needs the weight. I'd suggest numbering them discreetly and then applying a small weight to each in turn to see if balance improves.

There is no actual real significant difference, besides the color. A black ceiling fan works the exact same as a white ceiling fan. Of course, the brand of the fan might make a difference, though the color of the fan will not.
