Fetal Alcohol syndrome (FAS) is caused by a woman drinking too much alcohol during pregnancy. The pregnant woman typically is also malnourished, receives no pre-natal medical care, drinks tobacco and does drugs.

The amount of alcohol necessary to cause FAS is controversial but several important points are worth noting:

• Because it's impossible to "prove a negative," opponents of drinking alcohol in general can always and forever say that "no safe limit on consumption has been proven"

• There appears to be no evidence that drinking in moderation (no more than one drink of beer, wine or distilled spirits) by pregnant women has ever caused Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) or otherwise harmed a single baby. The burden of proof lies on those who contend that such drinking is harmful and they have not been able to do so.

• Women who choose to drink in moderation while pregnant can do so with knowledge that their decision is consistent with scientific evidence.

• There is always the possibility that some as yet unidentified harm to a baby might result from light or moderate drinking during pregnancy.

• Given the above possibility, even if remote, the very safest choice for an expectant mother's fetus would be to abstain.

• Women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant should discuss the matter with their own physician or health care provider.

If a pregnant woman consumes alcohol, it can harm the baby. Since the baby's nutrients are absorbed through the mothers blood stream, anything that is in it will go to the baby too. When a developing fetus is exposed to alcohol, it can disrupt the normal development pattern of the cells and the child will not be normal. Fetal alcohol syndrome babies are often born with mental retardation and deformities.

Fetal alcohol effect is not as severe.

In Case Of Alcohol & Man.........It Has Also Been Found That..The Man Who Is An Alcoholic....& Spouse Not A Drinker.......Can Also Some Times, Give A Birth To A Child With Birth Defects........Like A Child With Abnormal Brain Cells, Not Normal Like Other People. In That Case, Also Changing The Child's Situation Is Also Difficult, Becoz The Genes Which The Child Got From His Father...Get Destroyed Already, Becoz Of His Father's Alcoholic Situation.Becoz..Alcohol Taken Too Much Destroys The Genes, Which In result, Can Destroy The Genes Of The Child Who Takes A Birth....

---------

Science Also Say That......A Child's Genes....Sometimes Also Depends On Father's & Mother's Genes....

-----------

REMEMBER:-

1. Science does not tell how sickness appear in people but tells us that ilnesses can be transmitted.

2.Alcohol attacks the brain and genes. It may disolve neuronal cells

3.Are you are asking whether the traits of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome can be passed from a father with FAS to his children? I believe the answer is maybe. The damage that affected the fathers genes, will not necessarily affect the genes that go into his sperm and to the next generation if the gestation is otherwise healthy. However, if the father had genes that made him more vulnerable to prenatal exposure to alcohol then his child- fetus may also be vulnerable in the same way, and alcohol exposure may cause FAS.

4.The bottom line is: Don't expose a fetus to alcohol.

5.OK - you've heard several responses in regards to having a relationship or a child with an alcoholic. There are tests showing some cases of FAS with alcoholic fathers. These studies are difficult to substantiate as in most cases where the father is an alcoholic, the mother drinks as well (whether or not she is an alcoholic or a sympathy drinker). I can tell you from personal experience this is not a road you wish to travel down. Even if you left him and raised the child as your own, you still risk the health of your child. The studies show a small percentage of risk when just the father is involved. This has been due to the damage alcohol does to sperm.

6.Alcohol is more important than ANYTHING else to an active user and remains in the fore front to a recovering user. Do not tread down this path blindly. In my opinion, do not tread down it at all.

If you drink alcohol in the first trimester of pregnancy does that increase the chances of bearing a baby with Down syndrome?

Possibly, but there is no proven connection with Downs Syndrome. However, you may wish to consider and research Foetal (fetal) alchohol syndrome (Think Duelling Banjos!). Why take the risk with your unborn? Simply don't drink if you can possibly avoid it. If you really feel that you can't give up alcohol then please seek medical help for the sake of yourself and your baby.
