Outdoor cushions can be kept clean by washing them frequently using the cleaning instruction on the tag. Additionally, you can try to keep them clean by keeping them under some sort of canopy to keep them from getting moist during rain.

Trying to keep upholstery on indoor furniture clean can be difficult enough. The upholstered furniture that you have outside is under just as much assault if not more. It is exposed to the elements, like rain, wind, humidity, sunlight, and insects. All of this exposure can shorten the life of your outdoor upholstered items. It is important to clean them regularly to keep them looking like new, especially since you may not notice the damage it is enduring on an everyday basis. Here is how you should go about cleaning these cushions.

First, remove the cushion from the chair. Using a cloth or a towel, wipe the cushion gently to remove any dust, dirt, or insects that may be on it. You may decide that it is easier to use a soft-bristle brush for this task instead.

Using a handheld vacuum, vacuum the cushion on all sides and make sure all of the debris is removed.

Make a cleansing soap by mixing laundry detergent or dish soap with water. Stir this mixture vigorously until it foams.

Place a cloth or sponge into the liquid and lightly apply to the cushion. Watch to see if this action fades the color. If it does, take the cushion to someone who specializes in cleaning upholstery. These facilities have more precise tools that do not lead to the fading of colors.

If there is no loss of color, continue applying the detergent mixture all over the cushion until it is completely moistened and until you can see specks of dirt on the sponge or cloth. Once these specks of dirt appear, use a small brush to get rid of them so you can continue with your cleaning.

Once the cushion is moistened and has been gone over once, look to see if the dirt and other debris is lifting from the surface. If it is not, you may have to have it professionally cleaned. If it is, go over the cushion again and continue rubbing with the cloth or sponge until all of the debris is gone.

After cleaning, the cushion should be allowed to dry overnight. Keep the cushion indoors while it dries.
