Training a ferret to use the litter pan

A ferret eliminates by raising their tail and backing into a corner, usually always a corner. They will need to go as soon as they wake up. Before you let a ferret out of the cage, wait until they use the litter pan. In the cage, a ferret will not eliminate around their food area, try putting the litter pan in the opposite corners. Ferrets digest food very rapidly, every 3 to 4 hours, so they do eliminate a lot, but they will not go in a dirty litter pan. It must be kept clean, with a little feces left in it (to prevent being played in). When a ferret is out of its cage, it would be helpful to put an additional litter pan(s) in the area. An alternative, put newspaper or dog potty pads in the corners. Whenever you see a ferret backing into the corner, they are going to eliminate. Ferrets don't seem to have the ability to hold it, but try to catch them and put them into the litter tray. When a ferret is successful using the litter pan, use treats and praise as rewards. Never, never hit a ferret for bad behavior or rub their nose in feces, they do not understand.

Advice from other contributors:

* Ferrets are not always as reliable at potty training as cats. Some of the tricks I have tried with my ferrets are using a certain litter, and putting feces in the box to let them know where to go. I use blankets that were previously used to sleep in to put in areas where they should not defecate. It is also important to use a litter box that is low enough for them to get into easily. Some of my ferrets always push the box away and poop next to it. Even after owning ferrets for over 25 years I still don't have all the answers.

* I have been rescuing ferrets for several years and have found that the best solution to getting them to poop in the litter is limit their options.

* I had several who have been known to do anything and everything in their power to go behind or under the litter box.

* Solution - remove the litter box! I traded in cages so that the bottom of the cage is one big plastic tray and the 6' tall wire cage walls rise up from there. I dump about 10 lbs of litter into the bottom after every thorough cleaning, scoop as needed on a daily basis, and replenish low litter levels.Everyone seems to love it!

* When they get their playtime outside of the cage there are paper towels over news papers in every corner they have picked out as 'potty corners' and that all gets picked up and tossed out after each play session. I also found that it is easier if you let them pick out where they go and put the necessary supplies in those corner. I had one ferret who absolutely insisted in going in the bathroom and ONLY in the bathroom, which happened to be an off limits room to them at the time. Once we gave in and let him in he showed us that he wanted to back into the same corner as his mummy and daddy and that was all. Once we did that, he calmed down, he stopped being so agitated and hostile and was a very good little boy!

* Ferrets also have a very quirky sense of humor or perhaps its a design instinct or natural feng shui ability. It has been known that some ferrets will leave a single poop in a random area and if completely cleaned up they will replace it every chance they get! We left paper towels in those corners too, even though no one uses them. We just left them on the floor until company comes over and I picked them up.

* Easily. Ferrets habitually eliminate in a corner, they just do! Position its litter box first in a corner of it's cage & then move it to a corner of the bathroom, etc. or just leave the cage door open. Treat the box as you would a cat's litter box.

* Normally one would train animals by rewarding good behavior. How does one reward a ferret for doing its business in the right place and scold it for doing it in the wrong place? It may gain a complex and try to do its business in places that you can not see it. A ferret will want to be as hygienic as possible. Take advantage of this. Move the litter try to places where it tries to 'eliminate.' Also ensure that the contents of the litter tray are suitable for the critter - some cat litter is unhealthy for the animal and it will avoid it if at all possible.

* Ferrets go in corners, put newspapers in corners and a litter box. If ferrets go on the newspaper, put the poop in the litter box. If you see them backing up in a corner, say no, and put them in the litter box. If they go when you put them in the litter box, praise them. It's as easy as training a puppy.

* Corner-shaped litter boxes are made just for ferrets. Since it is their natural inclination to go in a corner, use corner-shaped litter boxes to make it easier to train. Put the corner-shaped litter box in a corner of the cage or room. * Ferrets can learn to use a litter tray. My ferrets use a litter tray from when we got them and they had never had one before. Some ferrets take longer to learn that they should go to the toilet in the litter tray. But it is possible!!!

However you do it, litter training your kitten is going to be a bit messy. Pretty much what you have to do is put the litter box in the room that your kitten is most familiar with. (It is a smart thing to familiarize your kitten to the bathroom:) or at least a room with tiles.) When your cat begins to pee or poo it will crouch. DON'T confuse sitting position with peeing position!!! This can confuse the kitten and will take longer for it to know what the litter box is for. The difference is that when a kitten has to pee it will stick its tail straight up in the air while sitting. When you see your cat in this position, quickly lift it into the litterbox. The kitten will continue its pee in the litterbox. You will have to do this a couple of times until the kitten smells its scent in the litterbox and finds out that it has to pee in there. Make sure that when you see it go to the litterbox by itsself to pee/poo, give it a treat and make sure it knows that it's done something good. DO NOT lift it out of the litterbox, distract it while it's doing its business or move the litterbox until your kitten has got the hang of it.

I hope this helped, and good luck :D

Hi! Here is an extra tip! If your kitten/cat doesn't respond to that, then sometimes it helps if you stick his nose in the litter. (But only after he goes in the wrong place!!)

What worked for me was putting the kitten in the litter box, then when it would jump out... I'd put it back in. I did this for about 2 minutes, and eventually she went. Once they go in the litter box once, they should be trained enough. Now if you leave your kitten alone, unable to get to the litter box, of course they may go anywhere.

When the kitten is properly trained for the litter box, and should you decide to move it i would recommend you doing this process over again. Maybe not for as long, but so they know where the new location is.

Often times with kittens, if the box is dirty, or has not been maintained, they may go elsewhere. A good idea would be to get a "pooper-scooper" which is a rake catcher designed for kitty poo. This way you are able to strain out the big chunks, so kitty feels more comfortable and does not need to avoid stepping in them, or dragging clumps across the floor.

Put the litter tray in a quiet area of the house. Cats will not go to the litter tray if stressed or feel they are constantly interrupted. They, like humans, like their privacy, too! Try a variety of different litter types. Wood pellets are a good choice as they break down quickly, will not usually cause the room to get dusty as clumping clay sometimes will, and they are naturally scented as the pellets are made out of pine.

Training a cat to use the litterbox usually isn't that difficult: Just show them where the tray is! You may have to remind the cat where it is the first few times. It might be a good idea to keep a couple of litter boxes around the house, especially if you live in a multi-cat household. Most cats don't need "training"; once they know where the tray is, they will happily go in it. Be sure to praise them when they use the tray!

Remove any poop using a poop-scoop each day, and completely clean the tray with warm water and soap every week, and place fresh litter in once the tray is dry.

For younger kittens:

Put your kitten in the litter box after every meal. They intend to poo or pee after meals. When the kitten is peeing or pooing on the ground while witness quickly bring it to the litter box instead. Also make sure there is no smell of poo or pee on the ground or they will find the same spot again and do their business in the same spot. It might be easier to train a male because they lift their foot and when they do quickly bring it to the litter box. When you're at the litter box show the kitten how to dig. Tip: it helps to have an older cat who already knows how to use the litter box because the kitten will copy the older cat. I didn't have to train any of my cats because they all copied their elders.

For Older Cats:

Put the litter box near a place where your cat visits frequently or where your cat keeps doing his business. When he is about to poo or pee bring him to the box.

I'm not sure how to do it with older cats but that's all I know. You could try the kitten way. You might be successful.

first you must show him or her were the litter box is than when you think they are going to use the rest room( squatting, or sitting in one spot for a LONG time) than you lift them up and set them in there box.

if is a kitten you must leave at least one piece of feaces in the box so that they can follow the smell to get there. or you could move it to a different location like my cat would use his box till i moved it inside the bath tub! hope this helps!

put your littter box in the corner of the cage and spread news paper all over the same level where your litter box is and when ever your ferret tinkles or has a movement rip the piace of newspaper up (the bit with tinkle) roll it up and put it in the litter box (if a movement) pick it up (not with bare hands) and place it in the litter box. your ferret should soon smell where all his/her bisness is and start going where all his/her movement are. hope this works for you!

Why is your cat not using litter box?

The litter box may not be clean enough for the cat or the cat feels uncomfortable in the litter box; a litter box should be cleaned every day or every second day, depending on how many cats you have. Maybe the cat does not know where the litter box is, if you move the litter box and don't show the cat its new location the cat won't know where the box is. The cat also mightn't be trained to use a litter box properly and might need a little help using it. Also, if a cat is very old, they mightn't realise they have to use the litter box or they do not have time to get to the litter box before they urinate etc. . The cat could also be sick.if your cat is just a kitten then the box might be too clean the kitten must smell where the toilet is.

How do you train your cat to stop using the litter tray?

How odd. Most people want to train their cats to use the litter tray, not to train them to stop using it. If you don't want your cat to use the litter tray, that's easy; remove the tray. If the tray is not there, the cat cannot use it. Move the litter tray outdoors to get your cat used to going outside and then, eventually, remove the litter tray completely.

Is it Ok to have a cat litter box in your room while being pregnant My cat litter box is in a storage room that is connected to my bedroom in an appartment I have no where else to put it?

It should be safe with a few precautions. Use the long handled plastic scoops to take the urine & feces out of the cat litter. Put this in another bag and take out to the garbage can. Use the self clumping type of cat litter. Don't use your hands and if you have to touch anything in the litter box, put some plastic gloves on first. Be sure to wash your hands after each time you clean up the litter box. Keep the litter box as clean as you can.
