A cold sore can occur due to several reasons. Stress, a family history of the herpes virus, and a weak immune system. Cold sores are passed by coming into direct contact (touching) with the herpes virus (such as kissing). The herpes virus is often passed on from the parents as a result of kissing their baby, so it may be a long time before this problem is controlled.

The herpes virus, which causes cold sores, remains ever present in your system. Normally there is no sign of them because your body's immune system can keep up with the fight against them. However, there are times, especially when fever is involved, that the symptoms of cold sores can break out. There are many excellent creams available that deal with this. Taking some extra vitamin C during outbreaks is considered by some to be helpful.

This question doesn't ask for information on treatment or maintenance of herpes sores, but does invite comment. As with any kind of physical lesion, always strictly observe the basic rule: don't touch it. If the wound or sore must be dressed use sterile saline solution to flush the area and apply sterile dressing when the area is dry. Never touch the area except to apply medication, and then wash and air-dry your hands very thoroughly.
