Type 1 Diabetes is genetic: it can happen to a small child, passed on by their parents' genes. It's an autoimmune disease that is caused by your antibodies attacking the insulin-producing cells (beta cells) in your pancreas. It is not caused by eating too much sugar.

Type 2 Diabetes can happen later in life. It is caused by poor lifestyle choices which cause the body to become resistant to insulin.

Type 2 Diabetes can occur in susceptible people who take in large amounts of simple or refined carbohydrates (sugar, white flour, white rice) regularly, overloading the body's natural regulation system of blood glucose. Obesity is closely-linked to Type 2 diabetes, and can both cause it and be caused by it.

There's a genetic link to predisposition to Type-2 diabetes, too -- not everyone who eats badly will get it, but if it runs in your family, eat carefully.

It's also possible for a pregnant woman to get temporary diabetes from the hormones involved in childbearing. Blood sugar usually normalizes again afterward with a sensible diet, but both mother and baby are likely to be prone to type-2 diabetes afterward.

One more thing: Type-2 diabetes begins as insulin resistance, and usually a type-2 person can produce their own insulin, albeit not as effectively as they'd like. But high blood sugar (from diabetes) can over time damage organs including the pancreas, leading in some cases to reduced or even zero capacity to produce insulin.

That's right: Badly-handled type-2 diabetes can eventually mimic type-1 diabetes.

If your question were: 'How do you NOT get diabetes', I'd say:

* Eat well: Keep the glycemic index (GI) of your diet low, avoid sweetened drinks and sugary food.

* Exercise: Stay in shape

If any kind of diabetes runs in your family, take the above advice deadly seriously. It could mean your life.

You really can't cause diabetes. Type 1 diabetes hasn't quite been figured out yet but Type 2 diabetes is usually diagnosed in obese or overweight people. You really shouldn't want to have diabetes anyway. It's not like it's a stupis little disease, it is more serious than you think it is. Hope I helped (:

type 1 diabeties is caused from not enough insulin in the pancreas

type 2 diabeties is caused by the body not being able to use the insulin to get glucose into the cells. Type 2 is more common if you are overweight, middle aged, and out of shape.
