Give your digestive system a rest by eating clear liquids until the worst symptoms pass, but be sure to keep the fluid intake more than or equal to the fluid loss you have from vomiting and diarrhea, even if you have to make yourself drink despite a lack of appetite. If this does not help after a few days, you may need to see a health care professional for confirmation of the diagnosis, treatment and evaluation of dehydration or other associated conditions.

There are also over the counter preparations for nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea that can be very effective. Ask your pharmacist for advice on the best types for your symptoms.

Although the "stomach flu" is a common term, it is not a real diagnosis. The proper medical term for stomach flu is gastroenteritis (an intestinal disease or infection, sometimes viral but it can also be a bacterial infection). It is often mistaken for influenza because the real influenza viral infection can sometimes include vomiting and diarrhea as symptoms.

The symptoms like those of "stomach flu" can also be caused by other things, such as a food-borne illness, like infection from E. coli or Salmonella from contaminated food sources; intestinal disorders like inflammatory bowel disease; and psychosomatic (emotional) disorders.

There are a couple things that happen to you with the stomach flu. 1st thing is that influenza is a virus and cannot be cured, however there are steps that you can take to make it pass as quickly as possible.

1. A fever is common with any type of flu. Take Motrin or any kind of ibuprofen for the fever. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) will work just as well (although can be harmful to the liver if not taken exactly according to label directions). This will also get rid of the aches and pain you might be feeling.

2. I wouldn't recommend taking any antacids, Pepto-Bismol or anything like that. Unfortunately, it will just make your case worse when it comes to digesting food.

3. Another problem is eating food and keeping it down. When you are eating, eat in spurts ex: a little now, a little later. Cramming food down your throat will only make matters worse and will be very messy if it decides to come back up. Chances are with the stomach flu, you wont be having much of an appetite anyway...

4. Diarrhea and Vomiting is common with the stomach flu. Its important to keep hydrated. Drinking sports drinks like Gatorade and Powerade, even vitamin water can help. They contain electrolytes and salts that your body loses. Drinking regular water can be just as fine.

5. Keep a bucket by your bed at night, this way if you have an accident, you can be as clean as possible.

6. TALK to your doctor! Sometimes, its not the stomach flu (if you haven't seen him/her already). It could be a bacterial infection in which case antibiotics will help.

lots and lots of rest. Do not eat solid food at first, as it may upset your stomach. drink Gatorade, water, or non-caffeine tea small bits at a time. When you feel well enough to eat, have starches like toast, a roll or a bagel with jam because they are best on your stomach. Do not eat anything with a lot of acids in it like Orange Juice or lemonade. Make sure you drink as much liquids as you possibly can (without it making you feel sick) because with an intestinal flu you lose a lot of water though diarrhea and vomiting. Do nothing exciting for about 2-4 days to recover. After that, move around but do not exert yourself until you feel strong and healthy again. The stomach flu is very contagious, so make sure not to come into contact with lot of people while you are recovering to avoid giving it to them.

Homeopathic remedy:

I would suggest taking Arsenicum Album 30 CH. It is a homeopathic, so you don't have to be afraid of side effects or overdose, but its very effective with this type of illness. You can get it as drops or as small granules (with sweet taste). Take 5 granules every hour if the condition is acute, or 5 granules three times a day if the condition is chronic (you can hardly find some universal dosing for this homeopathic, but as I mentioned before, you can't overdose). Make sure you take at least three doses to prevent diarrhea from returning. As for eating, I would suggest not to eat anything the first day and only dietary biscuits (crackers) and boiled potatoes with salt the next day (if your condition improves and you feel like eating).

You have to treat the symptoms until it runs it's course. Make sure to stay hydrated. On average it takes a week to two weeks to get over it. You can get a medication from your doctor like tamiflu, which when used as directed, can shorten the length and severity of your flu.
