Hens will lay eggs all by themselves when they are old enough. Many breeds start at about 5 months old and can continue for years but production usually declines after the first 15 months. When a chick reaches 5 months old they are fed a seed mix called "MASH" which has the right mix of proteins and nutrients to encourage egg production.

Either she will or she won't, a lot of it depends upon her breed. Commercial layers are less likely to incubate their eggs than heritage breeds.

∙ 14y agoi have raised laying hens for 25 yrs and sometimes they do quit laying altogether. but believe it or not you can spice up their food and they will start to lay again. How? well i add a little ground red peppers like cayenne . mix it with the food and within a week or two you should be getting more eggs. i also buy a hot and spicey powdered fish batter , to the food , and you will see results just make sure they have plenty of water available. ∙ 13y agoThere is no way to predict when a hen will decide to go broody. Certain breeds are more prone to sit on a clutch of eggs than others.
Cochin, Silky, Orpingtons and wyandottes are four breeds known to be good brooders.
Encourage brood behavior in the spring by not collecting eggs from one nest and allowing for some extra artificial light in the coop in the evenings.

∙ 12y agoFind the one that's eating the eggs, or you may have to chop their heads off if it doesn't stop. Sometimes it can be a lack of calcium in their diet, try crushed oyster shells. Eating eggs is a bad habit chickens can get into. I have had problems with egg eating when the chickens are cooped up and frustrated. When allowed to free range the eating habit subsided.

∙ 13y agoYou can't. Some chickens are naturally broody (sit on eggs) and others would eat their own eggs if they got a chance. A good breed of chicken for hatching eggs is a Cochin.
