I have never heard the feed or mains cable called a hose before, was that a typo?

In the USA most households have 110 to120 volt power for room outlets and lighting and 220 to 240 volts available for some ranges, dryers, heaters, etc. There are actually two 110 volt circuits, relative to ground (earth, neutral, return) but they are 180 degrees out of phase with each other so the voltage measured from one hot phase to the other is the sum of the two. In other words, the supply transformer is center-tapped with the center leg grounded.

That said, it is most common for the wiring to use the following conventions:

110 VAC - Black = Hot, White = Neutral, Bare or green = Safety Ground. Never just assume that is true!

220 VAC: Black and Red are normally HOT with 220 between them and White is neutral in four wire cable. Black and White are both hot to ground and bare/green always safety ground in cable having just 3 conductors.

Now another word of caution, it is common and within code for installations of 220 volt devices like water pumps to use cable having just a black, white, and bare wire with the white going to the other hot phase of the 220 volt feed. NEVER just assume that white is neutral. Always treat all the wires as if they were hot until you have measured the voltages with power on.

An inexpensive (around $6 US) pocket tester with a neon light in it can be a lifesaver because you can safely hold one lead and touch a circuit with the other. This can usually identify a hot circuit and even sometimes find a broken ground with a dim glow when touched.

How do you hook up a three phase welder?

Easy as one,two and three. There are four primary wires coming from you service panel.(provided you have three phase service) you can check by looking at the weather head on the roof. if it has three wires you have single phase but if it has four then you have three phase. the hot wires will be black, red and brown. the neutral will be white or green. the welder should have a manual that will give you the lead phase wire(most likely black to black) the other two hot wires can hook to any other hot wire. The neutral goes to the white or green and posts to the panel. If the welder has a switching power supply then you must have a three phase converter.

How hook up a startere on a Chevy Monte Carlo 1972?

Big cable from the battery goes to the big post on the solenoid. Solenoid will have two small posts one with an S one with an R. (Start side, relay side) largest of the small wires goes to the start side smaller of the two small wires goes to the r side. if there are three wires hook both the smaller wires to the r side. The larger of the small wires is usually always the start wire and is purple in color.
