You can record copy-free (non-commercial) video and audio from HDMI using a Mark of the Unicorn HD Express. It connects to your Mac Pro with a PCIe card, or your 17" MacBook Pro with a PCI Express card.
You cannot record HDMI signals from a Blu-Ray, DVD, Cable TV, or other commercial sources.
Apple sells a connector cable to send video to another device but it only has a S-connector on the output end. Audio would have to come through the headphone jack, I think.

It could be that your HDMI input card is defective, which means that it'll have to be replaced. For giggles though, unplug your TV for a few minutes and then plug it back in. This may reset the microprocessor and allow the card to work again. The other problem may simply be that you don't have something connected properly.

With an HDMI cable of course. If the Mac is like my old PowerBook and desktop PowerMac and only has DVI connectors, then you will need a DVI to HDMI adapter. You plug it into the Mac's DVI connector and plug the HDMI cable into it and the TV.
If it is connected correctly you may have use the TV remote to turn the TV to display what you are connected too. ( some TVs connect the PS3 to Video 1 or Video 2 or component 1 or S video etc) If it is with an HDMI connection set the HDTV and the PS3 to allow the HDMI connection to function
