Add an acid or a base to the solution to change the pH. Adding an acid will decrease the pH, while adding a base will increase the pH. The amount that the pH increases or decreases is dependent on the strength and concentration of the acid or base.

Some common acids include hydrochloric acid (HCl), nitric acid (HNO3), sulfuric acid (H2SO4), and acetic acid (CH3COOH).

Some common bases include sodium hydroxide (NaOH), potassium hydroxide (KOH), and ammonia (NH3), which when added to water is the same as ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH).

You can also add a buffer to the solution. This is not good for changing the pH a great deal of a solution that is already acidic/basic, but if you want to make a solution from water at a certain pH, the best way to do this is with a buffer. A buffered solution is also resistant to changes in the pH which is useful for carrying out reactions at a certain pH.

See the Related Questions links to the left for more information about how to prepare a buffer solution and how to calculate the pH of solution.

Well there are pH's zero through fourteen. Water (7) is considered neutral. 0<7 is considered an acid, 7> is a base. Acid is most acidic with a 0 pH; a base is most basic at 14. So if you want to increase the pH, add a base

What shows a tenfold increase in concentration of H plus ions?

A change in pH of 1 unit is equivalent to a 10 fold change in the concentration of H+ ions. So, a 10 fold increase in H+ ions will lower the pH by 1 pH unit.

How is a change in hydrogen ion concentration reflected in the pH?

pH is the negative logarithm of the hydrogen ion concentration; so an increase in hydrogen ion concentration give a reduction in pH. A reduction in hydrogen ion concentration causes an increase in pH.
