You could install it on an external drive without shutting down. You would download the live CD ISO and install is in a virtual machine (VirtualBox), add the external drive in the USB menu, and install as usual.

Second of all...I suppose you can just boot the Windoze CD and follow the instructions to reformat the drive. But make sure to make a backup of your important info first.

Have a look at WUBI (search Google) to install Ubuntu as a file, without making any changes to your Windows 8 hard-drive. To remove WUBI, simply use Windows utility to uninstall programs.
