After day 5 of incubation you can candle the egg to see shadowy changes within the egg.

There are no outward indicators of fertility with chicken eggs. Candling eggs means to shine a bright light into the end of the egg and observe the development of the embryo within. A non fertile egg will show no shadows within the shell.
