Hernia can be characterize by pain or discomfort in the groin, particularly whenÊÊbending , lifting or coughing. Swelling beneath the skin of the abdomen, and a heavy or burning sensation in the groin. In addition Êmen Êmay experience Êpain and swelling in the scrotum.
I've had a hernia since i was born, they call it an umbilical hernia . but i can tell that i still have it and it hasn't gone away (which sometimes can happen when your born with one) because i can see it through my stomach. its a knob right above my belly button, it pushes out about 1/2 an inch and i can push t back into my stomach and it'll disappear for maybe 30 min. at the most. but it always comes back and i can always feel it in there. they call it a "reducible hernia" ... that just means the size reduces when i push on it. it kinda feels like a balloon full of sand when i push it in. it hurts sometimes and it feels like my stomach is in knots in that spot too sometimes.. but its not fatal and it cannot hurt me seriously.

You know by visiting a doctor. He will tell you if your hernia requires operation.
If a doctor told you this, I'd suggest you get a second opinion. The only cure that I know of for a hernia is surgery.
The different kinds of hernia are listed below: * Congenital hernia: occur in babies, present from birth. * Inguinal hernia: common in sportsmen, involves part of the bowel protrudibng into the groin * Hiatus hernia: involves the stomach, where it enters the chest cavity via the hiatus. * Incarcerated hernia: where the hernia has swollen up. * Reducible hernia: one that can be manipulated back into place easily, much like a dislocated joint can be repositioned with relative ease. * Irreducible hernia: can't be returned to its original position without surgical intervention. * Strangulated hernia: potentially fatal, as it means the bood supply has been cut off by the hernia. There are even more types, each with their own subtle variations. These can be viewed from the link. [source: adapted from First Aid, by Geddes and Grosset]
"hiatal hernia" and "hiatus hernia"
Yes. There are different types of hernia. One can be next to your belly button. One can be around your belly button. I don't know about the other types.

A hiatal hernia can also be called a diaphragmatic hernia.
