George Lucas himself is responsible for this technical wizardry, back in the days of 8mm film. He was in college with friends, and developed a way to make a sword made of energy on film by taking a sharp instrument like a scalpel or x-acto knife and score above the handle of the "saber" on the film negative. As the negative cells caught movement, the score went in different angles and directions perpendicular to the holder's hands and arms. This way, it looked like he was using a saber. Actually, what they probably used was lengths of wooden dowel, or broom handles. When the film was scored, then put in a projector and ran, the scored part would let light through, but it would be in the same place a sword blade would be. Thus, "light sabers" were born, by a college student no less. Imagine what we owe now to George Lucas, for this moment of genius. Because of him, in a few decades, a working light saber might actually exist, based on scientists' understanding of physics and the manipulation of energy fields.

They used some animation using a software that made it look like it was done as stop-motion. However, for home movies, you would have to use stop-motion, and it would take years for a feature-length film.
