It is typically best to touch the animals under the animal's terms and conditions only. For example, allow the animal to stand on its own four feet and allow a clear route of escape. Do not force your love onto the animal. If you treat it right (and support your efforts with a treat, such as fresh mint or raspberry leaves), and the animal stays to enjoy your affections even if it is given a choice to escape, then you've got it right.
A good indicator is that the animal doesn't run away from you, and takes food from your hand. This demonstrates trust, but don't be frustrated if the animal takes the food and runs away with it. It is their nature.
