The jawbreaker is a hard candy and became popular in the mid nineteenth century and were sold singly. By the mid 1800's there were close to 400 candy factories operating in the United States that turned out hard candies like jawbreakers. The jawbreaker was made famous by the Ferrara Pan Candy Co, and how it got it's name is not known. The first time the term "jawbreaker" shows up in the English language is in 1839 and the meaning was a "hard to pronounce word". It was also used as slang for a dentist. The Pan candy company was started by Salvatore Ferrara in 1919 when he came to the US from Italy. In 1908 he opened a pastry shop in Chicago and among his products was a sugar coated almond. These became so popular he began another company to make them and began making candies. The company produced Boston Baked Beans, Red Hots, and jawbreakers. These candies became so popular that the earlier meanings of "jawbreaker" disappeared and began to be applied to all hard candies of this type. This still applies today and the Pan company is still the leading maker of hot pan candies through out the world.
