Peat moss is just made up of one of several types of moss in the genus Sphagnum. These plants enjoy growing in wet places, and have become used horticulturally on their own or in potting mixes because of their water retention abilities.

Peat moss is essentially leaf mold. One of the easiest ways to make it is to take a pile of leaves, run them through the lawn mower twice so they are crushed. Place them in a compost bin and crush them further.

The decayed, dried stage of the sphagnum moss in bogs, conifer forests, fens, and moist tundras is what peat moss is.

Specifically, sphagnum moss exists in wetlands. Cultivators, farmers, and gardeners know the peatland bryophyte's contributions to improved habitats for carnivorous plants, ericaceous shrubs, orchids, and sedges and its partial decomposition into peat moss. Peat moss may help lower soil pH by attracting calcium and magnesium cations and dispersing hydrogen ions. It also plays a major role in improving a soil's absorption and processing of moisture.
