Brushing their fur in the opposite direction is not a sign of purring ... they are growling, it can be painful.
Mine sometimes purr when getting fed their favorite treat. It is not very often they purr but you may mistake this with a growl.

∙ 14y agoYou can stroke a guinea pig as you do any cat or dog. Pet with a easy hand. Do not press too hard or too fast. These animals also like to have their bellies rubbed.
