This is for a standard 610gram triple beam balance. First of all, how big is the rock? If it has to much mass for your balance than you are in trouble. Next, calibrate the balance. The arrow/pointer should be pointing at the line with NOTHING ON IT AND THE WEIGHTS MOVED TO 0.0 ON EACH. Now put your rock on it. Even though all the books tell you to start with the one gram bar, start with the ten. Move it over until the arrow goes below the line. If it doesn't, move it back and start with the 100's gram weight. If it goes below the line, move it back a notch, and start moving the smaller weight than it. when you get it to the line, that is your number. To get the mass add the numbers that the arrow on all three weights is pointing to. If you found this confusing, I am Sorry, but it is hard to write directions on how to use a triple beam balance.

First, you need to calibrate the scale. Make sure the sliders are zeroed and turn the dial on the left-hand side to make sure it's zero. Second, place your weight on the scale. Use the 100-gram weight and move it until the "needle" dips below zero, then move it back 100g. Repeat with the 10-gram weight and the 0.1 gram. For the 0.1 gram weight, make sure that the "needle" is exactly on 0. (right-hand side). Your final measurement is the 100-gram weight plus the 10-gram weight plus the 0.1-gram weight. If you're still confused, search Google.
