First, choose stories that your students can relate to, stories that are relevant to their life, stories about themes they would be familiar with. I do not know what the age of your students is, but feel free to encourage them to read newspaper or magazine articles, if that will get them to read something. Even if it's a music magazine or a sports magazine, at least they are reading, and it's a first step to giving them more confidence to read more difficult material. If they are not good at reading, use performance to attract their attention-- tell them stories about the author's life, or tell them what was going on in the culture at the time a certain work of literature was written. You can also read something to them and then get them to discuss it. Most kids, even young teens, love an exciting story, especially one that has interesting characters and a plot that holds their attention.
And if possible, create a system of rewards that will encourage the students to put forth some extra effort; it doesn't have to be big, expensive prizes; it can be certificates, or an ice cream party in class, or whatever. Kids do love to feel important and to be recognized for their accomplishments, so find ways to incorporate this into your class. (But you should accept the fact that some days, even the best class is just not going to be very motivated, and it may not be your fault at all.) So keep providing new and interesting material (from books, from magazines, from plays), keep encouraging your students, and keep letting them know they really can improve.

As data from studies can be manipulated to support a result, there have been a variety of conflicting studies. However, most studies show that social skills of home schooled students are almost the same as non-home schooled students in adolescents who have good exposure to other kids through extracurricular activities.
