You can not open I-Pad music files in Excel.
First, when you go to open a file, you can the File Of Type option and you can choose other kinds of files that Excel can open. If you set it to All Files, you will be able to choose from a wider range of files, but Excel may not be able to open them.
Excel 2007 creates xlsx files, and earlier versions of Excel create xls files. The earlier versions won't be able to open the 2007 files. So you need Excel 2007 to open them or get a converter or try and open them in Google docs. I presume you mean 3 letter extension. In that case it is "xls". There are also other Excel extensions like "xlt", "xlw" and "xla", amongst others.
Only if you have an application on your MAC that is compatible with Excel and Word files. Most word processor programs have a way to import MS Word files and most spreadsheet programs can open MS Excel files. The best way to find out if your MAC has that capability is to try to open a file and see what happens.
