If your cell phone allows you to enter a plus sign as part of the phone number, enter the country code with the plus sign, followed by the city code (in many, but not all, cases, you must drop the leading '0' from the domestic area code) and the number.

For example, +12125550123 or +447700900123 or +35310123456

To write a telephone number in international format, begin with the telephone country code, prefixed only with a plus sign. Do not include any international dialing prefix, such as 00, since that will be confusing to people in areas that use different international dialing prefixes. In most but not all cases, you should drop the trunk prefix 0 from the national number. For example, mobile numbers in Ireland begin with 08x, which becomes +353 8x in international format. (There are a few countries, most notably Italy, that keep the 0 on some numbers when converting to international format.)

Lastly, a telephone number in international format should be written with absolutely no punctuation at all, except for the single plus sign at the beginning. Only blank spaces may be used to separate groups of digits. Do not use any dots, dashes, slashes, parentheses, brackets, periods, commas, or other punctuation of any kind.

CORRECT: +44 7700 900123

INCORRECT: ++0044 (0)7700/900-123

(The plus sign means "insert your international access prefix here." From a GSM mobile phone, you can enter the number in full international format, starting with the plus sign. The most common prefix is 00, but North America (USA, Canada, etc.) uses 011, Japan uses 010, Australia uses 0011, and many other countries use different prefixes.)

To write a telephone number in correct international format, begin with a single plus symbol and the telephone country code, omitting any dialing prefixes (which may vary from place to place). Then put a single blank space, the city code, again omitting any national dialing prefix unless it is also dialed in international format, another blank space, and then the subscriber number, using only digits and blank spaces. Absolutely never use any other punctuation or symbols except for the single plus sign at the beginning; in particular, never use dots, dashes, slashes, parentheses, or brackets.

For example:

  • correct: +44 20 7222 1234 (UK number 020 7222 1234)
  • incorrect: ++44 (0)20 7222-1234
  • incorrect: 0044 20 7222 1234 or 011-44-20-7222-1234
Note that Italy is a prominent exception to the rule of dropping the leading 0 from a domestic telephone number in international format. For example, Rome is domestic area code 06, which becomes +39 06 in international format.

What number do you put in front to call south Africa 087 from Australia mobile?

Australia's international dialing prefix (the code that replaces the +) is 0011, and South Africa's country code is 27. So you would dial 001127 followed by the 9-digit phone number. If the number you are calling is part of an international service like UPT (878) or SNAC (870), use the service's country code instead of South Africa's.

Does it makes any difference to put country code or without when dial locally?

You CAN put your country code even if you dial locally - BUT - you'll be charged international call rate, as the exchange would treat it as any other international call ! In some places, you can't dial the country code for your own country. For example, North America is country code +1, but you cannot dial 011-1-area code-number. In other places, you can dial the country code for a local call and still be charged local rates.
