  • Turn all traces of gas off and make sure there is no flammable items such as aerosol cans, petrol or anything like that near by.
  • Do NOT pour water over it! Water will only help the oil to create a bigger flame and the fire will explode and may harm or even kill you.
  • Get a towel and dampen it.
  • Ring it out so it is slightly damp.
  • Place it over the fire and leave it there for at least 30 minutes (depending on the size of the fire).
  • Placing a damp towel on the fire will stop oxygen from getting to the flames so the fire will smother out.
  • If you take the towel off before at least 30 minutes has gone, the fire will most likely explode and spread again.

What is a chip-pan fire?

The Stages of a chip pan fire 1. Oil gets so hot that it catches fire all by itself 2. Water is poured into the burning chip pan 3. Water is denser than oil, so it sinks to the bottom of the chip pan (shown in red). As the water touches the bottom, it is heated above its boiling point and instantly vaporizes. 4. The water vapour expands rapidly, ejecting a fireball of burning oil out of the chip pan and into the air where its surface area increases greatly and combustion proceeds much faster

How do you make a grease fire?

Throw water onto over-hot chip pan.

Why pouring water on to a chippan fire doesnt work?

The burning fat is much hotter than the boiling point of water so when you add water the water explodes into steam, shooting burning fat out of the chip pan into the air and round the kitchen. This spreads the fire. If you chip pan is on fire, turn off the source of heat. And place a damp teacloth or a lid over the chip pan leave and close the kitchen door and ring the fire brigade.

How does an evaporation pan work?

you put water in it then put it on a fire make shure you put your hand in the pan when on the fire good luck ps dont burn your hand

Why can't you put water over a chip pan?

If there is a chip pan which is on fire, the correct way to deal with this is to wet a tea towel, ring it out and then lay it over the top of the burning pan (this excludes the air from the fire) then turn off the heat under the pan and leave it to cool. You must not throw water into the pan because the fat in the pan is hotter than the boiling point of water and this causes the water to boil and explode, throwing burning fat all over you and the room. Water over a chip pan turns a small, controllable fire into an uncontrollable inferno.

How should you put out a chip-pan fire?

Cover the burning pan with a damp (not wet) tea towel.Turn of the heat source.Do not attempt to uncover the pan for at leat 4 hours.DO NOTAttempt to move the burning pan at any time.OrAttempt to extinguish the fire with water. In the event of any fireGet out.Call the fire brigade out.Do not return into the building until told it is safe to do so by the fire brigade.MAKE SURE ALL SMOKE ALARMS ARE WORKING.

Why do not attempt to put out fire using the fire extinguisher as this may the frying pan causing the fire to spread to other areas?

Frying-pan or chip-pan fires should be covered with a damp (NOT wet) cloth - and simply left alone for at least 30 minutes. This removes oxygen and extinguishes the flames. Using an extinguisher (which is pressurised) - may simply spread the burning oil around the area before it's effective at 'killing' the fire.
