to measure a saddle you need a measuring tape and follow these steps:
1: put the tape on the D ring on the pommel of the saddle(the rind at the front of the saddle)
2: now measure from the D rind to the middle of the cantle (the back of the saddle)
3: now in inches write down the recording!
NOTE: THIS ONLY WORKS FOR ENGLISH STYLE SADDLES! NOT WESTERN STYLE!
Same way you put on an English saddle. Pick up the saddle and gently place it over the horse's withers. Always put on a saddle pad before you put on the saddle. If you don't, it rubs on your horse's back and leaves marks.
First, western girhts are called cinches. It's just like a belt. When you put it on, put it a little loose. Before you go ride, tighten it again. You can stretch out a pony's legs to make the cinch more comfterable, but its hard to explain
The foundation for every saddle is the tree. They can be wood or what is called rawlide, or fiberglass. The different parts of the saddle are then attached to the tree, the horn, cantle, seat, skirts and stirrups. If it's a show saddle the silver will be attached last.
An English saddle is 2" more than a western saddle. For example:
14in western=16in English
16in western=18in English
18in western= 20in English
Usually the length is based on the rider (17", 17.5", 18", etc) but the tree width is based on the horse.
from the front of the seat to the back...
a saddle horn is on a western/american saddle
It's called a cinch on a western saddle.
The main difference is that a Western saddle has a horn, while an English saddle does not.
It sounds like you may have a 'youth' saddle. A pony saddle is pretty small and you would be able to tell right away that it was meant for ponies. A youth saddle is meant for that in-between stage when the rider has outgrown a pony saddle and is still to small for a full sized horse saddle. To find out you can measure the saddle's tree. Take a tape measure and start at the pommel and run the tape to the cantle. This will give you an idea of the size of the tree which is what the entire saddle is based on.
There are over 20 parts to a western saddle. Which 4 do you want to know?
I would do a close contact saddle or for western, a tree less saddle
You can use a western saddle on any breed of horse or pony providing they have been trained in western riding.
Saddle trees are made of wood or fiberglass.
A roping saddle , which is a Western type of saddle , has a 'slick fork' which facilitates the dismount of the rider ~ see related link below .
There is no equivalent to a saddle horn on an English saddle. The English saddle has no horn to any equivalent. The Western saddle was made for the cowboys, who needed something to help anchor the rope to after roping a cow. This is where the Western saddle was invented, designed for comfort for long days of hard riding in the saddle, and for usefulness, which is why it has all the little straps to tie things to, perfect room for saddle bags and such, and with the saddle horn having the direct purpose of dallying the rope. The English saddle was not used by cowboys, and therefore, there was no use for a saddle horn, so there is nothing there.
Black Saddle was on TV 1959-1960.
