Here are some ways to improve your reading skills:

• Make sure you know what the words mean. Use a dictionary if you don't understand a word or term. However ...
• Concentrate on understanding what a section means instead of on each individual word! Reading is the same as listening -- you need to understand the overall meaning instead of nit-picking.
• If you are reading a textbook, look for help by checking out anything that is bold, underlined, or written in large type. Those will be the important terms and ideas.
• If you are reading fiction, try to get a good mental image of the characters and the setting. The more vivid your images, the more you will enjoy the book.
• Don't push yourself. Unless you have an assignment with a due date, don't force yourself to keep reading if you're not interested. Take a break, and go back to the book when you're rested. Don't just give up, though -- do finish the book, even if you don't like it. Reading something you don't like helps give you a good idea of why that particular book "didn't work" or why you didn't like it. Analyze your feelings, and you'll learn more.
